For over fifty years the Capstone Project has been a culminating activity for graduating seniors at Antioch. It gives students an opportunity to explore, in-depth, a topic of interest to them. For students, capstone projects serve as evidence of your mastery of a topic, and can often be used as part of portfolios for employment or for graduate school applications.&#38;nbsp; For faculty, capstone projects help to expand scholarly endeavors and contribute new knowledge to the world, and to train the next generation of teachers, researchers, and practitioners.

The Early Stages of Novel Development

For my Creative Writing and Human Interaction major, I will be writing chapters from a future novel series within the fantasy and romance genre. The exploration of self-identity, the influence of propaganda, and embracing differences are some of the many focuses within this project. Set in a world with six kingdoms, Verena, a human soldier, is taught to fear and loathe the other five kingdoms that hold mystical beings with abilities and appearances passed down by ancient creatures. Taken outside the human walls by Elias, a magic-user of infamous legend, Verena is forced to situate herself amongst those she was once trained to kill. As Verena learns more of the political dynamics governing their rule, she must uncover what makes humans who they are and how to follow her own path of judgment.

Using Data Analytics to Quantify The Most Effective Social Media Platforms for Science Communications at Antioch College

Through Antioch College's prioritization of sustainable initiatives such as the Farm to Table Program and their LEED Certified buildings, the campus is recognized as a green space by the Yellow-Springs Community. A challenge that small colleges such as Antioch face is a lack of public awareness around its science division and its associated resources, primarily through multi-media avenues. Social networking platforms can be a beneficial tool within higher education for marketing purposes. Through data analytics, the effectiveness of various social media platforms was determined to highlight the best networking site to communicate about Antioch College’s science-related resources. The social networking platforms analyzed were Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok. Demographics and reachability were taken into account for each networking site to ensure transparency of their consumer base, but the data collected showed which social networking platforms produced the most consumer interactions. This project aims to understand how social media could be an effective tool for an institution with phenomenal ENVS/Sustainable resources but with a lack of effective communication tactics. This information could be important for communication tactics at Antioch College in the future for social media campaigns surrounding science-based initiatives.

About the Content Creator- Uli Sanroman will be receiving his Bachelors of Science in Sustainable Pedagogy, Policy, and Media Strategies.&#38;nbsp;He takes pride in his work within the realms of media, political theory, and environmental science. Although his bachelors is a niche area of study, it is still a degree that will have a large impact&#38;nbsp;in his future career within communications and policy. He is an animal lover, activist, natural empath, and an individual who connects with people past the superficial level. He uses different ways of communication to ensure that people feel supported and seen, while also teaching/learning along the way. Uli has had many trials and tribulations during his time at Antioch College, including the need to withdraw from courses and continue his immigration process in Ciudad Juarez, MX. Although these experiences can result in depressive thoughts, diminishment of motivation, and overall sadness - Uli still found ways to make things work while also still spreading love. His experience through the immigration system only made him that much more enthusiastic to succeed. Remember that you will one day hear his&#38;nbsp;name once again. Uli will be attending the University of Michigan-Dearborn this upcoming Fall 2022 semester. He will be pursuing a M.S in Human Centered Design and Engineering with a Concentration in User Experience Design. Thank you to everyone who helped me get here &#38;lt;3Keep your eyes and ears open kids, cause I have big plans for the future. Remember this name. Remember this face. Con carino - Ulises Sanroman-Espinosa

Special Thanks- I would like to thank my mother and sister for all of their support. Although I wished that I could've been there for them more over these last four years, I know that they understand the determination I had to complete my degree from this amazing institution. My mother instilled in me this&#38;nbsp;love of learning that I will&#38;nbsp;forever hold close to my heart. Without her support, I am not sure where I would be. I love you so much! Gracias por todo - Gracias por traerme a este mundo y a este&#38;nbsp;país para aprender y crecer como una persona responsable y creativa. ¡Los amo mucho!
Uli came to Antioch College only after his best friend (Amanda Garcia) encouraged him to apply - thanks to her determination to see him succeed, now Uli will be graduating with honors. Thank you Amanda for everything! Can't wait to see you back in Delaware amor &#38;lt;3
I'd like to give thanks to my Antioch friends Asher, Delaney, Ike, Maya, Austin, Noah, Maria Ramirez, Alexa, Rosie, Lola, Lexi Payton, Cara, and Juniper - Thank you for listening to my crazy ideas about becoming a doctor....or an paleontologist.....or a supreme court justice.....or a mega designer with a house in the hamptons. You guys always knew that I never meant to hurt anyone with my crazy ideas - actually you all understood that I just wanted to spread love and help others, which is why I could never choose. Thank you for guiding me with support and without judgement or critique. If it wasn't for you, I probably wouldn't have graduated from this institution due to the lack of support from others. I love you all - Can't wait to see how you take over the world in the next two yrs. Forever and always an Antiochian.

Interventions for Youth Homelessness in the U.S: A Systematic Review

I am passionate about social work. I want a career path that allows me to help the needy. Specifically, I want to help homeless kids and youths. I believe that everyone needs shelter to live in. However, I may not be in a position to ensure that every kid or youth has a home. But I can be there for them. I can play some roles that can help improve their lives. I plan to focus on this population in my senior capstone project that will represent the culmination of the SDM and Antioch education. I plan to research the interventions for youth homelessness. The U.S identifies youth homelessness as a national challenge. In response, various approaches have been taken to address this challenge. Some of these interventions include counseling and treatment addressing health risk behaviors, direct housing assistance, and programs run by the government and charities.

Connie’s Guide to Conifers

Within the past three decades, it has become increasingly clear that humankind is in the midst of an environmental crisis. Even so, ecological misinformation is repeatedly perpetuated by those whose power relies on the continued exploitation of marginalized people and the planet. In the face of blatant misinformation and deception, it is more important than ever to emphasize the importance of environmental education, especially for children. Some of our most significant childhood influences are literature, and as such, my senior capstone project has been focused on writing, illustrating, formating, and printing samples of an educational picture book about coniferous trees. The story follows a pinecone narrator through the ins and outs of how trees grow, what makes conifers unique, and what differentiates conifers from each other. Through thorough research, editing and outside review, I hope to have created an informative, accurate, and engaging piece of literature that can be used by both educators and parents as a teaching tool.

"Black Hair Power”: The Inter-Generational Psychology of Black Women's Hair

Since the Natural Hair Movement started in the 90's, Black women have redefined what beauty is through a "counter-hegemonic strategy" based on refusing to follow the standards of beauty set by White people. With hundreds of years of being told that African features are not attractive, hair texture has the power to define how Black women view themselves and how they treat themselves. Black women's sense of self-esteem is closely linked to their perception of their hair. This project analyzes how Black women's sense of self-esteem and confidence have changed or remained the same over the course of history. By conducting short, in-depth interviews, we discover what hairstyle makes them feel beautiful and what hairstyle makes them feel empowered. As part of this project, we have created an interactive art installation that represents an “old school” hair salon as a place where many Black women have worked to empower themselves through dialogue, community, and beauty. It is with gratitude that we thank the Black women who have shared their personal stories with us, as well as the many pioneers before us who have fought to create safe spaces for Black women to embrace their beauty fearlessly.

Development and Analysis of the Antioch College Freshwater Mussel (Bivalvia: Unionoida)
Collection Database

The objective of this project was to build a foundation of data that allows further research of The Antioch College freshwater mussel collection through wider public access. To achieve this, the taxonomic, location, and collection data, recorded by Antioch College Alumn David Metty, needed to be digitally documented, normalized, and assessed. The collection has at least 5143 freshwater mussel samples representing 77 species of Bivalves in 43 genera across 11 states. The collection’s diversity and richness are considered with regard to geographic distribution, taxonomy, and conservation status over time. This project also provides a framework for the continued development and maintenance of the Antioch College mussel collection and database as well as future research that can be conducted.</description>

&#38;nbsp; A Proposed Diet for the prevention and management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2022 National Diabetes Statistics Report, 10.5% of Americans are currently living with diabetes or prediabetes. In recent years, the relationship between the pathogenesis of T2DM and the gut microbiome has received considerable attention. Recent research has demonstrated a connection between the gut microbiome, metabolic disease, and food intake. Utilizing the knowledge gained from this research, a novel diet based on high amounts of dietary fiber, short-chain fatty acids, probiotics, and prebiotics has been proposed as an effective tool to prevent the onset of or better manage the adverse side effects of T2DM.

Intersections of Race and Class in Rural America
This project is a literature review on the intersection of race and class in rural America. How has US rural history contributed to our current moment of political polarization? The literature review centers on three books that help us answer this question. The first, Nancy Isenberg’s White Trash: 400 Years of Untold History of Class in America is a long retelling of US history explaining how the construction of “white” served as a means of maintaining political authority and legitimating prevailing social class structures. The second, John Gaventa’s Power &#38;amp; Powerlessness uses Appalachia as a case study to explain how hierarchies of power were historically maintained by excluding the rural working class and poor from political agenda-setting and ascribing ideals and values that disable them from collectively resolving their grievances. The third, J.D Vance's Hillbilly Elegy is a memoir that illustrates these ideas and values – specifically, the boot-strap narratives that mythologizes the “self-made individual” while blaming community members for their woes. The final product is an essay on the importance of intersectionality when combating systemic oppression from all angles: don’t ever punch down, only up.
