Development and Analysis of the Antioch College Freshwater Mussel (Bivalvia: Unionoida)

Collection Database

The objective of this project was to build a foundation of data that allows further research of The Antioch College freshwater mussel collection through wider public access. To achieve this, the taxonomic, location, and collection data, recorded by Antioch College Alumn David Metty, needed to be digitally documented, normalized, and assessed. The collection has at least 5143 freshwater mussel samples representing 77 species of Bivalves in 43 genera across 11 states. The collection’s diversity and richness are considered with regard to geographic distribution, taxonomy, and conservation status over time. This project also provides a framework for the continued development and maintenance of the Antioch College mussel collection and database as well as future research that can be conducted.
